3.01 One and Two-Step Equations

Objective: To solve equations using the addition and multiplication properties

Narration:  Students must show all of the steps involved in solving one and two-step equations, working to isolate the variable to one side of the equation

Algebra Notes - http://www.algebranotes.com/ - Visit Lesson 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4 to review this lesson online.

Assignment: Page 116: #7 – 12; Page 122: #10 – 18; Page 127: #11 – 20; Page 128: #32 – 36; Page 137: #7 – 10; Page 138:#23 - 26

3.02 Equations with Fractions and Decimals

Objective:  To clear an equation of fractions or decimals

Narration:  To simplify the solving of equations containing fractions, one can multiply both sides of the equation by the common denominator.  To simplify equations containing decimals, multiply both sides of the equation by 10 in order to move the decimal point over one place or by 100 in order to move the decimal over two places.

Assignment: Page 140: #13 – 23

3.03 Absolute Value

Objective: To solve equations containing absolute value

Narration: First isolate the absolute value, and then locate the two equations

Assignment: Page 146: 23 – 32

3.04 Proportions

Objective: To solve problems involving proportions

Narration: When two ratios are set equal to one another, it creates a proportion.  The method used in this lesson to solve proportions is to multiply both sides of the equation by the common denominator (the method used in section 3.03 above)

Assignment: Page 150: 1 – 6, 22 – 28

3.05 Percent

Objective: To solve equations involving percents

Narration: Percent means per one hundred.  To solve problems involving percent, we can change the percent to a decimal by moving the decimal to the left two places.  We can solve problems involving percent by using a proportion or by translating to an equation and solving.  Since problems with fractional percents are more easily solved by translating to an equation, that method is recommended here.

3.06 More Expressions and Equations

Objective: To translate compound phrases into algebraic expressions, and to solve problems by writing and solving equations

Narration:  When problems contain more than one variable, first decide which unknown quantity the variable will represent and then express the other unknown quantities in terms of that variable.

3.07 At the Movies

Objective: To solve a word problem using proportions

At the Movies

It is now 7:51 p.m.  The movie that you have waited three weeks to see starts at 8:15 p.m.  Standing in line for the movie, you count 146 people ahead of you.  Nine people can buy their tickets in 70 seconds.  Will you be able to buy your ticket before the movie starts?

Show your calculations and explain your solution.

Email your answer to your teacher.

3.08 SET

Objective: To develop reasoning skills

Narration: The more frequently you play this game, the faster you will develop your mathematical reasoning skills!

Assignment: Continue to play the game of SET at least twice per week.  Continue to record your time on your Excel spreadsheet and email it to your teacher each week.

3.09 Self Test

Objective:  For you to complete the self test with a perfect score.

Complete the self test which is a review of the concepts you learned in this lesson  before you take the Module Test.
