Lesson 4 - Adding Fractions

Adding fractions can only be performed when the denominators are the same.  The easiest fractions to add are the ones that start with the same denominators.  These are called, like fractions.

Adding like fractions only involve the numerators.  To solve, simply look at the numerators and subtract.  NEVER add the denominators.

For example:

Adding unlike fractions, fractions with different denominators, require more work.

For example:

First, find a common denominator. fract_ad4.gif (1280 bytes)

Next, add the numerators.  (Make the denominator one number so as not to add them together by mistake).
