Visual and Performing Arts
Elementary
In an age when many school districts throughout the state are cutting back on music programs for financial and philosophical reasons, the Clovis Unified School District offers one of the finest elementary music programs in the state. Approximately 30 highly trained music specialists provide instruction for every child in grades one through four in general music at least once a week for an average of 30 minutes. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of music through a variety of experiences and activities.
At the fifth and sixth grade levels, students may participate in band, orchestra or choir as a part of their regular school day. School choruses, bands and orchestras contribute both to the school and the community through participation in school assemblies, district functions, drama productions and community concerts. On occasion, they also participate in honor choirs and instrumental groups throughout the state.
Art at the elementary level is delivered by both classroom teachers and parent volunteers (Art Docents). Many of the teachers have been trained in Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE) and use the latest methods in visual arts education. The parent docents conduct supplementary lessons in the classroom using District-developed and supplied materials.
Each school site has a drama club advisor who typically produces one or two drama productions a year. The advisor also teaches drama techniques before or after school.
Intermediate
At the intermediate level, students may choose drama, art, band, orchestra and chorus classes as electives. These classes are taught by highly qualified practitioners.
High School
At the high school level, a wide variety of drama, art, dance, vocal and instrumental music classes are offered. Numerous opportunities are presented for students to perform in their discipline outside the classroom during the school year.
The success of the Clovis Unified School District's Visual and Performing Arts program is due to the support and commitment of the CUSD Governing Board, administrative staff and the community. This support ensures that arts education within Clovis Unified will continue to thrive and expand into the next century.
For more information at the site level, parents are urged to contact their child's GATE coordinator or principal regarding the specific program at the school. In addition, news about GATE activities should appear in each school's newsletter and on the school's website.
