Clovis Unified School District News Article

Good afternoon Clovis Unified families! In her update today, Superintendent O’Brien touches on the possible extended suspension of on-site classes and credit for work completed during the suspension of on-site programs. Watch her update here:

As our third week of distance learning gets underway, we encourage our students to stay connected with their teachers, and for families to share with us examples of how you are embracing distance learning.  If you haven’t already been watching our school and district social media pages, check them out. Each one is a treasure trove of positive stories of how our students and staffs are demonstrating creativity and care for each other.

A few quick updates that you may find of interest:
  • The big question on people’s minds is whether we will be extending the suspension of on-site classes past April 14. Though we have continued to plan for the worst and hope for the return to school after Spring Break, the President’s extension of social distancing guidance through April 30 and the on-going statewide Executive Order of Governor Newsom make a path back to class by April 14 unlikely.

  • Superintendent O’Brien has recommended that the Governing Board at their meeting this week extend the suspension of on-site programs through Friday, May 1. If the Board agrees, an announcement will be made Thursday confirming the extension. Thank you for your patience in allowing the Governing Board to hold its meeting and discuss this important decision for our community.

  • Grades, grades, grades. We also have received a lot of questions about whether work assigned during this temporary suspension will be graded. The California Department of Education is discussing this topic with superintendents around California, and it appears likely that the decision will remain a local one. We continue to encourage our students to stay engaged with their classes, complete work assigned, and continue to learn, even while a final determination of how end of semester grades will be assigned has not yet been made.

  • Meal service: Meal service is continuing this week, with two-days-worth of meals provided on Thursday, April 2. This will allow for a suspension of the seamless meals program over Spring Break, as has been planned since meal service first began mid-March. Notice of the locations, dates and times of meal distribution, along with multiple other resources for families is available online at cusd.com.

  • The first videos from our Together, We’ve Got This series, focused on emotional wellness for families, are now available online. A special edition of CUSD Today should also have arrived in your mailbox this weekend with resources in both English and Spanish. See the digital version HERE.
