A message to our parents:
Please watch this personal message to families from Superintendent Eimear O’Brien, Ed.D.:

And her message to students:

During their April 1, 2020, meeting the Clovis Unified Governing Board authorized the extension of Clovis Unified’s suspension of on-site classes from April 13 to May 1, but emphasized that distance learning is well underway.  The Board accepted the recommendation by Superintendent O’Brien, which was made recognizing that the current public health situation is changing rapidly and that it may be necessary in the future to consider a further extension.

“We will not open our schools prematurely, but feel that it is also not yet time to make a decision that so greatly impacts our students and families by suspending on-site instruction all the way through the final days of the current school year,” O’Brien said.

According to Superintendent O’Brien, the district’s educational team will continue to deliver distance learning and meal service to students.  Moving forward, work will focus on finalizing plans for how work will be evaluated and the Class of 2020 will be honored under both a scenario in which students return to onsite classes or one in which distance learning continues through the end of school.

Some other helpful information for parents as we head into Spring Break:
  • Parent Resources: Attached is a Parent Bulletin designed to put resources to support distance learning into the hands of our families. Please check out this bulletin that points to supports and learning interventions, along with family wellness resources to help your child be successful.
  • Grades: We recognize that is a huge question for families. Just this week, we have seen additional information about grading expectations released by the California Department of Education, the University of California and the California State University systems, the College Board, and other entities that play an important role in how California’s students progress in school, especially for our high school students. For now, our students need to know that the work being assigned and completed during distance learning will be factored into your year-end grades. Students should focus on participating in and completing work assigned. Everything’s going to count. And, just like we hope that our students extend some grace to their teachers, who practically overnight turned their planned curriculum into packet and online work, we’re going to give our students some grace, too!
  • Graduation: The short answer to that question is yes, our seniors who want to graduate and who stick with us through distance learning… are going to graduate, and graduate on time. That is true of any student, so long as students engage in distance learning, they will be on track to continue on to the next grade level.

We will also have some form of recognition for our Class of 2020. One of the reasons that we have not extended our suspension of onsite programs all the way through the end of the school year is to allow for us to have a better sense of what kind of graduation celebration, whether virtual, remote, or in person will be possible, but be assured: We will celebrate our seniors, and we will do so within the timeframe of the current school year.  We already have a lot of ideas that we’re exploring to make sure that our seniors, who have worked so hard for the past 13 years to walk across the graduation stage, are allowed in some way to experience graduation.  It may have to look different, but we will celebrate this June.

  • Meals: Meal service is suspended during Spring Break, with meals for both April 2 (Thursday) and April 3 (Friday) distributed today. However, volunteers will be distributing grocery boxes at three locations between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday, April 3 for families in need. These boxes contain fruits, vegetables and pre-packaged proteins and snacks to provide students with nutritious food over Spring Break. The boxes will be distributed on a first come, first-served basis while supplies last at Kastner Intermediate, Miramonte Elementary and Sierra Vista Elementary on April 3. Meal Service resumes Tuesday, April 14 with times and locations updated on cusd.com regularly.
  • Technology Support: Schools continue to work with students to ensure that needed technology is in the hands of students who don’t have access at home. In addition to surveys conducted by your child’s school, if your family needs assistance accessing the internet through a hot spot, or a laptop for learning please contact your child’s school to arrange the temporary use of devices during our distance learning window.
  • Use of Our Campuses: As California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Stay at Home order continues and our campuses are closed for on-site programs we ask that our community respect social distancing guidelines should they be on school grounds.
  • Spring Break: Distance learning will be on Spring Break next week through April 14, and we hope that your family finds time to relax, enjoy some down time, and take a deep breath. School offices and the district office complex will also be closed to observe Spring Break. We look forward to resuming school on April 14 as we prepare for the final weeks of the school year.
