Liberty Elementary earns spot on 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools list
Clovis Unified school one of three public schools from Sacramento to the Grapevine and only school in Fresno County to receive US Department of Education’s highest honor

The Skyhawks at Liberty Elementary School in Clovis Unified are celebrating today after learning that the US Department of Education has selected their school as one of only 30 California schools named to the 2019 Blue Ribbon Schools list. The northeast Fresno school, that serves close to 600 students, was recognized with the Exemplary High Performing School award.

Recognition as a Blue Ribbon School is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “As a National Blue Ribbon School, your school demonstrates what is possible when committed educators hold all students and staff to high standards and create vibrant, innovative cultures of teaching and learning.”

The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.

Now in its 37th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 9,000 schools. On November 14 and 15, the Secretary and the Department of Education will celebrate with 312 public and 50 non-public school honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.

Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites National Blue Ribbon School nominations from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by The Council for American Private Education (CAPE).

About Liberty Elementary
Every student who attends Liberty Elementary School is supported by an entire community, from leaders of local businesses to organized committees of parent volunteers to highly trained staff. At Liberty, students do not face adversity alone, instead are taught to view learning as a collaborative process, where peers and adults become partners in unraveling confusion, solving problems, and exploring ideas. Students reach their fullest potential in teams, not in isolation. They are taught to support one another as they struggle to grow academically and social-emotionally.

Classrooms are personalized to address the unique learning styles of students. Couches, ball chairs, stools, adjustable desks, and other furniture are used to optimize a child's engagement. Teachers begin each year by building relationships with students, identifying strengths and weaknesses, not only academically but verbally, socially, and emotionally. From this authentic assessment, teachers mentor students how to work together, creating the capacity for effective academic discourse. Students take ownership of their learning by exploring topics that stimulate curiosity, and they present their learning in various formats to an audience of peers. Students experience how the pursuit of knowledge and the development of academic skills enhance their understanding of the world around them.

Liberty has established a "We" culture of leadership. A large cohort of adults and students come together with a common purpose, which is to ensure that all students can successfully navigate the path of high standards and rigorous curriculum, preparing them for a future where every Skyhawk can "Fly High, Fly Proud."
