California Senate Bill 12


During the 2007/2008 school year, The Clovis Unified Campus Catering Department will be focusing on implementing the requirements of California Senate Bill 12 which become effective July 1, 2007.  The Campus Catering Department already offers many a la carte foods that are SB12 compliant.  Beginning July 1, 2007, all groups selling foods on school campuses must comply with SB 12 regulations.

Specific criteria of SB 12 are contained in the following chart.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Foods that can be sold to students are full meals, exempt foods, and a la carte dairy or whole grain foods that meet specific standards for calories, fat, saturated fat and sugar.  This applies from the beginning of school until one-half hour after the school day ends.

Exempt Foods:
  • Nuts
  • Nut Butters
  • Seeds
  • Eggs
  • Cheese packaged for individual sale
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables that have not been deep fried
  • Legumes

SB 12 Compliant Foods:
  • Dairy or Whole Grain
    • Not more than 175 calories per individual food items
    • Not more than 35% of its total calories shall be from fat
    • Not more than 10% of its total calories shall be from saturated fat
    • Not more than 35% of its total weight from sugar (natural or added)

Elementary Snack Shack/Bar Guidelines and Items

SECONDARY SCHOOLS (Intermediate & High Schools)
Foods that can be sold to students are full meals, exempt foods, and a la carte snacks and entrées that meet specific standards for calories, fat, saturated fat and sugar.  This applies from the beginning of school until one-half hour after the school day ends.

Exempt Foods:
  • Nuts
  • Nut Butters
  • Seeds
  • Eggs
  • Cheese packaged for individual sale
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables that have not been deep fried
  • Legumes

SB 12 Compliant Foods:
  • Not more than 250 calories per individual food items
  • Not more than 35% of its total calories shall be from fat
  • Not more than 10% of its total calories shall be from saturated fat
  • Not more than 35% of its total weight from sugar (natural or added)
SB 12 Compliant Entrées
  • Not more than 400 calories per entrée
  • Not more than 4 grams of fat per 100 calories


Intermediate & High School Student Store List of Food Items for the 07-08 School Year

The following is a list of the food items that may be sold at Student Store for the 07-08 School Year. Food items on this list, except for peanuts, must be calculated to see if they meet CA Senate Bill 12 requirements listed below:

• No more than 250 calories per individual food item
• No more than 35% of its total calories shall be from fat
- no more than 3.88 gm of fat per 100 calories
• No more than 10% of its total calories shall be from saturated fat
- no more than 1.1 gm saturated fat per 100 calories
• No more than 35% of its net weight shall be composed of sugar including naturally occurring and added sugar
- no more than 35 gm sugar per 100 gm of net weight
