Clovis Unified School District News Article

During their meeting tonight, the Governing Board discussed the status of Clovis Unified’s suspension of on-site classes through May 1, the courageous and uplifting work of our Clovis Unified educational team to support our students, the current status of California’s Stay at Home Order and local orders related to COVID-19 mitigation, and guidance from the Fresno County Department of Public Health.  Following their discussion, the Board voted to extend the temporary suspension of on-site instruction through May 22, 2020.  The Board reserved the option, if possible, to resume some form of on-site student and teacher interaction during the final two weeks of the school year.  While considering the possibility that the status of the COVID-19 outbreak would still prohibit the return of students to classes, the Board retained the option to consider the issue at their meetings on May 6 and May 20, 2020, to reassess the status of widespread population testing and federal, state and local social distancing guidance.

During their meeting, the Board also:
  • Received a report from the Coordinated School Health Committee summarizing work over the year to promote and support student’s overall health.
  • Recognized the student winners of this year’s American Legion Essay Contest. Fifteen student essayists were selected as first, second or third place winners for essays about patriotism and service.
  • Approved student fundraisers, student trips, change orders, purchase orders and contracts as submitted, noting that any events or trips scheduled before in-person instruction resumes on campuses would not take place.
  • Accepted the K-12 Strong Workforce Program to support career-ready graduates.
  • Authorized an agreement for the District’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) programs in the coming year.
  • Adopted resolutions declaring Annual School Nurse’s Day as May 6, and May 1, 2020, as School Lunch Hero Day to recognize the contributions of these employee groups to our students.
  • Approved updated Board policies in the 3000 series – Business and Noninstructional Operations, and repealing policies formerly numbered 4606, 4801, 4804, 7206, and 8203, which are no longer necessary given the addition of policies in the 3000 series. Policies are available online at cusd.com.
  • Approved the placement of a student with exceptional needs in a nonpublic school setting to receive services identified in the student’s individualized educational plan.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Governing Board is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, 2020. Complete agendas and minutes from meetings, along with video, is available online at cusd.com.
