What is a Powered Industrial Truck?

A PIT Vehicle is defined by CAL-OSHA as any mobile power-propelled truck or cart (LPG, gas, or electric powered) used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack or tier materials. Examples include personal burden carriers, utility carts, golf carts, forklifts, pallet jacks, etc. 

What do I have to do to obtain and or renew a PIT Operator Permit?  

PIT Operator Permits are only issued to CUSD employees or Volunteers who have successfully completed both classroom/online instruction and Behind-the-Wheel training. For step-by-step instructions download a PDF version.

Do minor PIT accidents have to be reported? 

No matter how minor the accident may be, ALL PIT ACCIDENTS MUST BE REPORTED TO YOUR SITE SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY. A District Accident Report shall be completed the day of the accident and turned in to your Site Supervisor, by the end of your shift.

What happens to my PIT Permit If I’m involved in an accident? 

If the accident was clearly not your fault nothing happens.   If there is any question as to who is at fault, a temporary suspension will be imposed pending the outcome of the accident investigation.  If you are found to be at fault, a minimum 30 day suspension & mandatory retraining will be imposed.

Am I required to conduct a safety inspection?

Drivers shall check the vehicle at the beginning of each shift and  submit a written Daily Inspection Report. If the PIT vehicle is found to be unsafe, the matter shall be reported immediately to your Site Supervisor, and the vehicle shall not be put in service again until it has been made safe. Attention shall be given to the proper functioning of tires, horn, lights, battery, controller, brakes, steering mechanism, cooling system, and the lift system for fork lifts (forks, chains, cable, and limit switches).

A PIT vehicle has been donated to us – what do we do next? 

If your department has received a vehicle thru a donation or your site intends to purchase or rent a PIT vehicle, you must contact the CUSD Transportation Department Vehicle Control Technician, Tom Lopez at  327-9668 or tomlopez@cusd.com  and the Purchasing  Department for additional instructions.  All PIT vehicles must be approved and specific documentation (and training) completed BEFORE a PIT vehicle can be placed into service.
