CPR, AED, & First Aid

Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid Training through Risk Management

Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid covers materials that apply to only individuals 8-years-old & older.

The CUSD Risk Management Office administers the Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid Program. This program trains eligible employees, coaches, and volunteers for both new certifications and recertifications in Adult-Only CPR, AED, and First Aid at no cost to the participants.

Risk Management hosts several in-person new certification courses & a couple recertification skills testing sessions over the course of the school year; please review the Training Course Schedule section below for more details.

The District has its own list of instructors certified to teach CPR, AED, and First Aid. These instructors provide all the trainings for the year & conduct hands-on skills testing for each trainee during the certification & recertification process.

Certifications issued outside of the District must be reviewed prior to being accepted. Please see our Training Guidelines or FAQ sections below for more details.

To start the training process, please click the link to our CPR, AED, and First Aid Training Form below.

Please review the information below for details on the guidelines that the Risk Management Department uses to determine your training. To start the training process, please visit our Training Link section below.

There are no exceptions for any of the guidelines provided below.

  • Through CUSD, new certification courses are conducted in-person & are around 4.5 hours in length. To receive training free-of-charge through the District under a new certification, an employee must attend the in-person training.

Who is required to attend an in-person course?

    • Someone never previously trained in Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid

Important Note for New Employees: You must be fully cleared by your CUSD HR specialist in order to receive training through the District. You will know you are cleared to work when you have your final onboarding appointment with your HR specialist.

    • Someone whose previous training does not meet CUSD and/or OSHA requirements
      • Your previous training will not qualify if it falls into the following categories:
        • Training was conducted only online with no in-person skills testing
        • Previous certification card did not include three core skills of CPR, AED, and First Aid
        • Previous certification card is more than 6 months expired

Have questions? Please contact Yvette Garcia at yvettegarcia2@cusd.com.

  • Through CUSD, recertifications are conducted in two parts:

    1. Online Coursework through the Health & Safety Institute (HSI)
    2. In-Person Skills Testing (online coursework must be completed prior)

    Who qualifies for recertification?

    • Someone whose previous training meets the following qualifications:
      • Covered all three core skills of Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid
      • Conducted in-person, hands-on skills testing prior to issuing an official certification card
    • Someone whose previous certification is less than 6 months expired

Who is not qualified for recertification?

    • Someone whose previous training is missing one of the three core skills (CPR, AED, and First Aid)
    • Someone whose previous certification is more than 6 months expired

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Please refer back to the Training Link section for details on starting the training process through CUSD.

  • Employees, coaches, and volunteers have the option to receive certifications from an approved program outside of the District at their own expense.

There are some local programs in the Fresno/Clovis Area that offer training that meets CUSD standards, but there are specific requirements that an organization/course must meet:

    • Course must be conducted through an organization certified to issue CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications, such as American Red Cross.
    • Course must cover all three core skills (CPR, AED, and First Aid) for at least Adults.
    • Course must provide hands-on, in-person skills testing of all three skills prior to issuing a certification card.
      • Blended training (online course with in-person skills testing) is accepted by the District for new certifications.
        • Due to CUSD’s high training standard, we do not currently offer blended training for new certifications.
    • COACHES: You will still need to complete the additional training requirements for concussion, sudden cardiac arrest, and heat illness prevention.
  • The most common reasons a certification from an outside agency would be denied:

    • Online-only training with no hands on skills testing: Per OSHA regulations, CPR, AED, and First Aid training must include hands-on skills testing.
    • Missing a required core skill: Not all three core skills – CPR, AED, and First Aid – were provided in the previous training.
    • Previous certification is expired beyond 6 months: CUSD will not accept a certification that has been expired for 6 months or more. To rectify this, you must attend a new certification course through CUSD or an outside organization that meets CUSD & OSHA requirements.
  • Per the CA Department of Education, teaching credential students are required to receive certification in Infant/Child/Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid. CUSD does not offer a certification that satisfies these requirements.

If an employee/coach needs a certification for their credential and for coaching, they will need to take a class through an outside agency that meets the following requirements:

    • Course must be conducted through an organization certified to issue CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications, such as American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or CPR Fresno
    • Course must cover all three core skills (CPR, AED, and First Aid) for at least Adults
    • Course must provide hands-on, in-person skills testing of all three skills prior to issuing a certification card
  • The Risk Management CPR program is not involved in issuing certifications for aquatics coaches. You would need to reach out to Kacy Ota directly for details on training.

  • Child Development has their own CPR training program that is managed through their own department; their training covers Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED, and First Aid, which is a different certification than what the Risk Management Office offers.

Please reach out to your supervisor directly for information on how to sign up for CPR training through Child Development.

  • Yes, but new employees must complete the hiring process & be cleared to work by Human Resources prior to being enrolled. Please reach out to your HR specialist for more information.

  • Yes, but volunteers must complete a background check & be cleared by Human Resources prior to signing up for a CPR, AED, and First Aid class.
