Surrogate Parent
What is a Surrogate Parent Volunteer?
Purpose:
To make educational decisions and advocate for the student's needs in special education when the student's parents are unable.
When Needed:
When a student’s parent cannot be located or parental rights have been terminated.
Role:
The surrogate parent participates in all aspects of the special education process, including evaluations, IEP meetings, and placement decisions.
Responsibilities:
This includes reviewing records, providing consent for evaluations and placements, and advocating for the student's needs.
Not a Replacement for Parents:
Surrogate parents do not assume non-educational rights, such as medical decision-making.
CURRENT CLOVIS UNIFIED EMPLOYEES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE.
In order to be a volunteer Surrogate Parent, you will be expected to:
- Have a good working knowledge of the IEP process
- Pass a fingerprint screening & comply with the District’s Volunteer Policy
- Have a flexible schedule to be able to attend meetings
- Attend training & become qualified
